Eulogy for a Tombstone

we are all living

we are all dying

some of us chose to remember this fact

some of chose to forget

some of us could not forget

even if we tried

But most of us

travel these paths

wandering in and out of knowing and forgetting

awareness and omission

deception and description

trying not to choke on the smoke

while

straining

our eyes

towards the light

Death Sheath
Death
Will rip my dreams from me
I must dream a new world
Little dreams die every day
As time passes
Death
Creeps slowly across my body
Like a vine insidiously
Swallowing a life
Of any kind
What life do I dream next?
As this one peels away in pieces
Like the skin of a snake, a tree
Shedding life

Within limits and all that is unique to ME

Just like everyone else

I exalt my life

and try to live  and love with others

How far will I go?

Just go  with ganas and push out regrets

To the end and Le’chaim

Don’t complicate your meditation with elaborated things,

only remember to open your heart to all beings.

No compliques tu meditacion con cosas elaboradas,

solo recuerda abrir tu corazon a todos los seres.

For Carole

I’m not talking to you

I can’t see past the burnt

and scaling flesh

to the pink softness of memory,

my mouth moving too quickly

to know what I’m saying,

while yours,

so slowly deliberate,

and effort to say more than the pain

so I tell you of mine

while your hair falls out in handfuls.

When I was 16

And others were deciding

who they wanted to be

when they grew up,

my decision was to be

ready when it was

my time to die.

remember you will die

Remember you will die, but you can’t forget to live,

There is so much to see, so much to give.

I walked the path with so few, when there were so many with whom I could have made the stride,

And when it was all over they all died, with out me to share and give,

For alas I had forgotten to live.

Memento Mori

Today, Melissa found the body of a small mouse

belly up in between the glass of the kitchen window

and the screen that keeps the bugs away.

Yesterday, we saw my great uncle’s printer hands

and gentle face and perfect hair for the last time

when the lid of the coffin was shut before prayer.

Three days ago, I was thinking about his passing,

how he left us quietly the day before, his belly

full of memories and whatever they fed him.

Four days ago, he died.  I was on the other side

of a phone line when she told me, my mother’s voice

the sound that used to keep me safe for years.
